U.S. citizens over the age of 15 who have not had an adult passport before, or who's previous passport is expired for more than 5 years will apply for a New Passport.
Passport Renewal applications are for U.S. citizens who already have held a valid adult passport. To apply as a renewal, the passport must be expired fewer than 5 years and be in good condition.
Passport holders who cannot find their current valid passport apply just like they would for a New Passport, and report the previous passport lost or stolen.
All children and infants age 15 and under must have a valid U.S. passport to travel overseas. Child passports are good for 5 years, cannot be renewed, and are only issued with the full consent of parents or legal guardians.
Passports that have any kind of damage that exceeds normal wear and tear cannot be used for travel. Applicants should apply as they would for a New Passport or Child Passport.
Passport cards are a handy and less expensive alternative to the standard passport book, for travelers who make regular land and sea border crossings. While the cost is less, the applications are the same. Passport cards are not accepted for any kind of overseas air travel.
